Priory Tiles

   Home      Bawsey Relief Tiles
We are currently developing a range of floor tiles based on tiles from the Bawsey tilery near Kings Lynn in Norfolk, the tiles were made around 1376 and were relief or counter relief tiles. They are very similar to make as encaustic tiles for the first stages but after the carved design is pressed into the clay they are simply glazed with dark or lighter glaze. We are hoping to increase the colour range by slip coating the tiles. There will be several different designs including the tile which the carver very carefully carved the name Thomas in two rows of three letters but unfortunately forgot to reverse the design before carving it resulting in the tile you can now see in the V & A Museum.
